Bus Driver Training Requirements

In order to start your bus driver training, it's important to know the requirements needed to get your commercial drivers license to drive a bus.

The requirements for a Bus Driver will depend on what type of bus and how many passengers as well as what type of passengers you plan to carry. First, we need to start with a commercial drivers license, otherwise known as a CDL.

A CDL comes in several classes, for most Bus Drivers you will need at least a Class B CDL. However, many will simply get the highest, which is a Class C. With a Class B CDL, you will be able to drive a commercial bus with a large number of passengers, much like those you see in city streets.

However, what most people don't know about a Bus Driver is that you also need what are called special "Endorsements". These endorsements are specialized certifications. To carry passengers in a public transportation bus, you will need a "P" endorsement. It's needed anytime you plan to carry regular passengers on your bus.

For a school Bus Driver and to carry students, you will need an "S" endorsement. This is needed to know the different rules and regulations your state has on carrying and transporting students.

Getting proper and professional Bus Driver Training is important in order to pass all the written and skills tests that are required by each state. There are many qualified bus driver training schools near you. You can either look online or check out your own state DMV office for a list of training schools sanctioned by your state.
